On September 1, 1939, the Polish military aviation was the first to stand alone against the German Luftwaffe. Despite the enormous advantage on the enemy side, Polish airmen fought bravely for almost three weeks, inflicting severe losses on the enemy. When the Soviet Union joined the conflict and treacherously attacked Poland, causing a final blow to her back, further fighting was impossible to continue. Poland, as the only country in Europe, despite being defeated, never surrendered. Polish airmen were evacuated and with determination continued their fight against the Germans in France, flying alongside the Armée de l'Air. After the shameful French capitulation, they managed to get to Great Britain, which they called the Island of Last Hope.

On the basis of Polish-British agreements signed by the heads of states, in the summer of 1940 within the territory of United Kingdom Polish military aviation was reborn and from this moment was known as the Polish Air Force. They flew and fought under the operational command of the Royal Air Force, but in many respects remained independent. During the Second World War, there were 17,000 men and women of the Polish Air Force who served alongside the British. Almost 2,000 of them died during combat, operational flights or during training. Poles in the UK had as many as 14 their own squadrons, including: fighter, bomber or reconnaissance units, they also had their own flying and technical schools of various levels organized to train Polish flying and ground personnel. The most famous Polish squadron turned out to be No. 303 Squadron, also known as ‘Tadeusz Kościuszko City of Warsaw’ Squadron, that continued the pre-war traditions of the 7th Fighter Squadron and then 111th Fighter Squadron. During the Battle for Britain it was 303 Squadron that claimed the highest number of aerial victories in the entire Fighter Command, even though 303 did not enter the action until the end of August 1940. 303 Squadron also has become an iconic unit, which is still known today both in Poland and Great Britain. It has also become a symbol of a joint Polish and British fight for freedom.

W czasie drugiej wojny światowej u boku Brytyjczykow slużyło aż 17 000 mężczyzn i kobiet należących do polskiego lotnictwa. W czasie bitwy o Anglię to właśnie ten dywizjon uzyskał największą ilość zwycięstw powietrznych w całej Fighter Command, mimo że do akcji wszedł dopiero końcem sierpnia 1940 roku.
